Basel GAA 5 years anniversary

In November 2015, 11 people met up to create Basel GAA Club.

Fast forward five years and on October 10th 2020, Basel GAA celebrated our fifth anniversary with a group of approximately 40 kids and our senior members. It was an historic meeting at the border between France and Switzerland, not least because both seniors and juniors were standing pitch-side with their face masks on until the action kicked off.

The morning began with Niall and Len leading the Under 8 group in a session on Hurling skills and they followed that with a football game called ‘Rob the nest’, while being cheered on by their older siblings & friends.

Meanwhile on the other pitch, Paul, our Juvenile Officer & Head Coach, took the older kids through their paces with a Hurling skills session followed by a match. He was helped along by Shane, Sean, Larry, Brian, & Matthieu while the parents cheered from the sideline.

The highlight of the event was the football game between the older kids and the seniors, helped out by the parents. The seniors took a quick lead with two goals but the kids quickly answered with a few points. At half time, the seniors led by three points. The second half, however, took a change of direction. The kids were motivated by their coach, Paul, to get stuck in and after their captain, Sophia, and then Tomás, scored a few goals and points, the game finished up with a four-point victory for the kids.

The celebration continued at Paddy Reilly’s, Basel, where a special guest, John White, Secretary of the GGE, gave awards to the kids and the coaches.

Membership of the club has been growing strongly in 2019/2020, and for the 2021 season the club plans to add an additional underage group (U10) in addition to the existing U6/U8 and U12/U14 groups.

Thanks to all the members of Basel GAA for your continued support of the club.
Thanks to all coaches for their dedication at training and their selfless generosity with their time.
Thanks to the youth committee and senior committee for their energy and enthusiasm in trying to promote the club.
Thanks to John White for your presence at this event and for the motivation & encouragement you gave to the kids.
Thanks to the GGE for all of your support over the last five years and looking forward to working further with you to grow Basel GAA club.
